Greetings,

My educational journey has taken me through group homes in Boston and Burlington, community service projects in Montgomery, Harlem, and Costa Rica, to the hills and forests of Vermont, and in schools on the Navajo Nation, Massachusetts, and Vermont. Now, I am honored to move into a leadership position at the school I love, Eden Central School!

Along with the experiential education experiences, I have studied at Bucknell University, Johnson State College, and Saint Michael’s College.  At each level, I learned the importance of discussion, collaboration, and colleagueship, along with the love of learning.

Currently, I live in Cambridge, Vermont with my partner, daughter, and our chocolate lab.  Our daughter is a proud graduate of Cambridge Elementary School and Lamoille Union High School and this fall will begin her junior year at Towson University in Maryland.  We enjoy many outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, swimming, and canoeing.  Our backyard badminton court is the home to some friendly competition!

Twenty years ago when I applied to a teaching position in Eden, I discovered that Federico Garcia Lorca, one of my favorite authors, spent time at Lake Eden during the summer of 1929.  His poems written in Eden are replete with images of beauty and feelings of revelation.

The rugged beauty of Eden and the proud people in this community are incredible.  I have experienced many epiphanies during the time teaching and learning in Eden and I hope to experience many more.

Best Regards,

September 2, 2021

Greetings,

It has been amazing to have our students back in school!  These youngsters have been excited to be here, are becoming accustomed to their classroom routines and  earning feathers for positive behaviors.  A new substitute in our school commented on how polite the students are here at Eden Central School.  Eden Eagles rock!

One change to our schedule is that the After-School Program will not begin until September 14, 2021.  Please look for a brochure explaining class offerings in student take home folders next week.  These classes are a great opportunity for students to try something new and different.

We would like to reintroduce two folks that are working with us again this year. It is wonderful to have these dedicated professionals joining our team.

  • Nicola Martino is our new Home-School Coordinator.  She studied Human Development & Family Studies at UVM and is currently in the School Counseling Program at NVU.  Our hope is that she will be able to strengthen our communications between home and school.  She loves snowboarding, gardening, and walking her dog, Fluke.

  • Heidi Fortin, who joined us last year as Mrs. Oquendo’s long term substitute, joins us this year as a Reading Interventionist. A native Vermonter, she is the mother of two, soon to be three children.  She studied Human Services & Counseling at Lyndon State College and went on to earn her teaching degree at University of New England in Maine. Ms. Fortin taught for nine years in Newport and was the Assistant Principal there for one year.  She enjoys the outdoors and spending time with her family.

There is no school Friday, September 3, and Monday, September 6.  Please enjoy the long weekend.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards,

September 10, 2021

Greetings Eden Central School Families,

Our students have done an excellent job settling into their routines at school.  They are earning feathers to honor behavior that exemplifies our three school rules - Show Respect; Have Fun; and Have a Safe Body. Once students have earned enough feathers that all of the puzzle pieces have been removed, we have a school-wide celebration!

I have always felt that ECS is a welcoming place for new students.  When I left school last Thursday, one of our new students was here at school playing with some of the student’s new classmates.   Seeing this group of students together demonstrates the welcoming nature of our school community.

This school year, the LNSU will be offering an opportunity for weekly COVID-19 testing.  Students may only participate in the program with permission from a parent or guardian. To participate in the program, a parent must sign this consent form on behalf of the student.  This link to this form can be found on the Eden website,

Home - Eden Central School (lnsd.org), under the Community Tab in the COVID19 section. This testing will begin on September 20,2021.

Session 1 of the Eden Afterschool Program begins on September 13, 2021 and ends on October 28, 2021. Paperwork for this program should have been included in your child’s take home folder this week. If you have any questions about the program, please call the Site Coordinator, Carrie Ferguson at 802-730-3930.

Thank-you for your support to make Eden Central School a great place to learn! If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.
