Partnering for Wellness: Lamoille Union High School and Green Mountain Tech Introduce Vape Detectors

Dear Lamoille Union High School and Green Mountain Tech Families,

Across Vermont and the nation, schools continue to face challenges related to student vaping. At both Lamoille Union High School and Green Mountain Tech, we take this issue very seriously and remain committed to creating a safe, healthy learning environment for all students. Despite ongoing prevention efforts and education around the risks of vaping, incidents continue to occur on school grounds.

In an effort to discourage and prevent vaping in our schools, new vape detection sensors have been installed in the bathrooms at Lamoille Union High School and Green Mountain Tech. To be clear, these devices do not capture or record audio or video.

These devices discreetly monitor and alert school administration when vaping activity is detected, allowing staff to respond appropriately and in accordance with each school's student-parent handbook.

This initiative was made possible by EPSDT grant money awarded to both schools by the Vermont Department of Health.

A vape detector going off while a student is in the restroom constitutes reasonable grounds for suspicion. It may lead to a conversation or search in accordance with our student handbooks. While the detectors can serve as a corrective and, at times, punitive tool to address inappropriate behavior, they also play a vital role in helping staff identify students who may need additional support. Their purpose extends beyond discipline—they are part of our broader effort to prevent harm, promote education, and reduce the risks associated with nicotine use. Ultimately, our goal is to help students make positive, healthy choices and to provide assistance to those who may already be struggling with addiction.

Currently, these devices are in a 'calibration' phase. Notices will be posted in restrooms to inform students, staff, and visitors to our buildings of the new equipment.

In the coming days, students will receive information about the new sensors, their purpose, and how they align with our school's commitment to health, safety, and respect for one another. We encourage families to continue this meaningful conversation at home—discussing the dangers of vaping and the resources available for support and cessation.

Our shared goal is to partner with families and the wider community to ensure that every student has access to a safe and supportive learning environment.

If you have any questions or would like additional information, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting our students' well-being.

Sincerely,
